Spottswoode 2022 “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 100 Points -MAGNUM

FMW 100 Points: “The 2022 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate showcases an amazing aroma of black stone fruits with floral and earthy notes.   The lush palate is loaded with black currant, blueberries, cassis, and a kiss of dark chocolate. The wine is big, bold, and ripe, a real exuberant beauty, but with amazing elegance. The 2022 is perfectly balanced, with silky and fine-grained tannins leading to a great finish. A good 90 to 120-minute decant will allow you to enjoy it now, but it’s better with some time in the cellar.”

Robert Parker Wine Advocate 98 Points: “Recently released (September 2025), Spottswoode’s 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps slightly bigger than usual for this property but still retains a sense of freshness. Loaded with cassis and blackberries, it’s full-bodied, plush and voluptuous, yet also long and mouthwatering on the finish. Wonderfully forward but balanced, the juicy fruit is successfully framed by silky, soft tannins. It’s a vintage to enjoy while waiting for the 2021 and 2023 to mature.”

TWI 98 Points: “The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep garnet-purple color. After a little swirling, expressive notes of blackcurrant jelly, kirsch, and juicy plums emerge from the glass, leading to touches of crushed rocks, iron ore, lavender, and cloves. The medium-bodied palate had a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness supporting the densely packed black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. Exemplary”

Winemaker Notes: “Our lanky thoroughbred is getting ready to run” sums up the youngest release. It shows youthful tannins, bursting with wild strawberries, marionberries, and violets on the palate. Layers of graham cracker, baking spice, cocoa powder, and toasted spice draw you in. A slight salinity ties it together.

Vintage Notes: The 2022 growing season began with much-needed rainfall as dry, warm conditions in late 2021 had left the vines with little stored water. Fruit set was thus light, and early irrigation was necessary. A healthy bloom in May led to a balanced growing season with moderate temperatures and no significant heat spikes until August. Despite a significant, brief heat spike in early September, proactive measures like shade cloth and deep irrigations maintained vine health. By September 23, all grapes arrived in excellent condition, showcasing the ideal acidity and focused flavors to which we aspire.
