Vinous 98 Points: “The 2020 El Alma de Jonata’s Cabernet Franc-based wine, is ridiculously great. The Franc is way up in 2020, and that results in a heady, explosive red that takes command of all that senses as it demands full attention. An exotic melange of dark red fruit, wildflowers, mocha, spice, and new leather build as the 2020 gains volume and resonance with air, with plenty of supporting structure to wrap it all together. It’s one of the greatest Bordeaux wines I have tasted in Santa Barabar. Wow!!”
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ Points: “Based largely on Cabernet Franc, the 2020 El Alma De Jonata offers some Loire-like greenness and herbal nuances as well as brilliant darker cherry and currant fruits, notes of chocolate and violets, medium to full body, a pure, precise mouthfeel, and ripe tannins. It’s a singular, gorgeous expression of this variety that’s going to keep for 15+ years. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it only got better. It’s an incredible wine that’s going to flirt with perfection at maturity.”
Matt Dees Winemaker: A supercharged, perfumed, and energetic vintage for the Cabernet Franc at JONATA. It walks the delicate line between brooding black fruit and cooling green herbs with grace and confidence. Verdant notes of sage and rosemary are counterbalanced beautifully by cassis, blackberry and cacao. The essence of crushed stone. On the attack, the wine is endowed with dense, muscular, and chewy blackberry. Menthol and black cherry. Lurking underneath the beautiful fruit expression, the tannins are powerful yet ultimately defined by finesse. Dried herb and saline nuances. This is a serious Alma that shines today but will also no doubt enter into a lovely cocoon in the cellar and emerge as a butterfly in a few years time. I can’t recall another Alma with this much intensity, complexity, and true pleasure.”
