This is Zinfandel in one of its most beautiful states. Sourced from stoic 110 year old vines on the north eastern edge of Calistoga in fertile alluvial soils. What captures me in this wine is its return to the understated nature of the varietal. This isn’t a simple jam-filled wine that but one of sophistication and subtlety, to let the varietal, terroir and the vintage shine through.
Beginning with sweet cherry, plum and subtle vanillin oak tones, the aromas lift cleanly from the glass. One the palate, this wine is consciously direct and to the point. A wine for connoisseurs and serious fans of what Zinfandel truly is. The choice to age the wine in 40% new French Oak heightens and supports the detail of the wine further showcasing purity of fruit and carrying the back-palate out very nicely for over a minute.
