HALCON 2019 PINOT NOIR “OPPENLANDER” MENDOCINO 91+ Points
The Halcon Petite Sirah is another exceedingly elegant, seamless wine from Gordon’s estate vineyard. Deep purple-hued with notes of blueberries, California bay leaf, violets, and bouquet garni, it’s medium-bodied, elegant, and lightly textured, with the fresh, focused, streamlined style that’s present in all these new releases. It’s going to be reasonably approachable on release yet keep for 15 years, if you’re so inclined.
Winery Notes: “We followed our now standard regime of 50% whole-cluster fermentation with aging in neutral French oak. Our most powerful version of this wine to date, with strong tannin and ample fruit. The wine shows lots of peppery spice, dried herbs and a dense core of dark fruits. It drinks well early and should improve throughout the decade. We bottled 180 cases unfined and unfiltered. “
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points: “The 2019 Petite Sirah Tierra is all varietal and comes from the Theopolis Vineyard in the Yorkville Highlands. This deep purple-hued effort gives up juicy, ripe, savory notes of ripe blue and black fruits, peppery herbs, graphite, and candied violets. It’s another pure, precise, impressive wine from Paul Gordon and his team that’s medium-bodied, has good, nicely integrated acidity, and notable tannins. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age and is going to keep for 15+.”
