Vinous 97 Points: This is now the third opportunity I have had to review the utterly stunning 2019 Syrah SJR Vineyard – a wine that is actually showing better than when I first tasted it. Initially more reticent and Burgundian, this polished Syrah was aged in 60% new French oak before bottling. The wine shows beautiful red rose petals, nori, smoldering stones, and orange blossom. The palate is exceedingly elegant with silky tannins and a light dusting of white pepper and salinity. Ripe strawberry, pomegranate and orange rind flavors combine with wet stone and rose water undertones. Make sure to give this beautiful Syrah at least an hour of air if consumed in its youth.
Wine Notes: “A deep purple-red hue with a captivating bouquet of violets, licorice, blackberry, huckleberry, five-spice powder, bacon fat, smoldering incense, and dark chocolate. Beautifully precise on the palate with notes of black plum, blackberry, truffles, nutmeg, allspice, white pepper, and stony minerality. Subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate, grilled thyme, and vanilla are also present. On the exquisite finish, the wine has an umami character, full of salinity and stony minerality.
