Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points: Coming from a site in Coombsville, which is a cooler region of the valley, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Meeting With The Mentor reveals a vivid purple color as well as a Haut-Brion-like bouquet of cassis, unsmoked tobacco, lead pencil, gravelly earth, and chocolate. This carries to a full-bodied, incredibly elegant Cabernet that, again, has a Pessac-like elegance and purity, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a beautiful sense of elegance paired with richness. It reminds me of some of the old-school Cabernets from Napa Valley and is going to evolve for upwards of 30 years or more.
Tasting Notes: Born from prehistoric volcanic soils of the Coombsville AVA, this wine showcases notes of blackcurrant, mocha, and cigar box encapsulated in an inky core. Well-structured, and incredibly fresh in its youth, the wine envelops the palate with dense, concentrated flavors of macerated blackberry, dark chocolate, and coffee. Persistent, fine-grained tannin and focused acidity create an impossibly long, lingering finish that suggests this will reward the senses in the coming decades.

The meaning behind the name (by Bibiana): “The Meeting with the Mentor is the crucial turning point in the hero’s journey. Our hero seeks guidance and knowledge at the beginning of the quest to overcome the many obstacles blocking the path towards the ultimate reward. This wine is an homage to the mentors I had over many years of training and education in Bordeaux. Their sage advice has given me the strength and confidence to become the winemaker I am today.”
