FMW 98 Points: The amazing 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a 100% Estate-grown wine, consisting of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot. The wine oozes bold blackstone fruits on the nose with a hint of baking spice. On the “W.A.W” (What a Wine) palate, this lush and full-bodied wine offers up concentrated yet elegant layers of gorgeous black currant, cassis, and dark chocolate flavors that lead into a long, graceful, and fine-grained tannin finish.
Winemaker Notes: “This vintage is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot, all estate-grown. Upon pouring, the wine exhibits a dark ruby color with a rim that leans slightly purple. The aromatics are delightful, with top notes of cassis, blackberry, and violets, followed by hints of pencil shavings, black licorice, and forest floor. The wine is medium weight, refined, and elegant, tasting of cassis and blue fruits with a bright note of raspberry on the mid-palate. The nicely integrated tannins and balanced acidity show lively energy in its youth, and the long finish again displays the bright cassis revealed throughout.”
The “Aftermath” Story: After Jim completed a PhD in Applied Mathematics, he moved to Chicago, where he was an assistant professor of mathematics at Northwestern University. Then, he moved to Boston, where he became a tenured associate professor of mathematics at Boston University.
A consulting relationship involving options trading morphed into the founding of an investment advisory business, J.L. Kaplan Associates, which grew to manage $5.3 billion at its peak. This business was sold to Wachovia Bank in 2002. In 2007, Jim founded a successor company, Cubic Asset Management, which was sold to CW Advisors in 2024 and where he continues working to this day.
Jim’s passion for wine extends over three decades. The brand name, Aftermath, is a tribute to Jim’s early career – literally, a new career after math.
